A survey found that Kuala Lumpur has the highest literacy percentage in Malaysia. The majority of academic topics are taught in Malay, whereas mathematics and scientific sciences are taught in English. But teaching and learning capabilities vary by educational degree. Kuala Lumpur contains 13 universities, 79 high schools, 155 primary schools, 136 kindergartens, and is home to Malaysia’s oldest university, University of Malaya.
Many schools have been in Kuala Lumpur for many years, catering to the expats from those countries. After WWII, in the 1950s, a few Australians, mainly military and merchants, visited Malaysia. Most Australians choose to visit the UK rather than Malaysia due to the high cost of tourism. The advent of music via radio in the 1960s, coupled with Malaysia’s beauty, gastronomy, and friendliness, drew more Australians to the nation, increasing traffic by 1970. However, Australians tended to travel as tourists rather than expatriates, therefore the creation of schools based on the Australian curriculum lagged behind other countries. Two Australian institutions near Kuala Lumpur offer academic programs and facilities that are unmatched globally. Both are in Selangor (20 km from Kuala Lumpur).
